The influence of binary star evolution on the formation of evolved massive stars such as
luminous blue variables, Wolf–Rayet stars, and the progenitors of
certain classes of core collapse supernova is still disputed.

The SN 1054 supernova, which gave birth to the Crab Nebula, was also observed by Chinese
and Islamic astronomers. The brightest stellar event in recorded history was the SN 1006 supernova, which was observed
in 1006 and written about by the Egyptian astronomer Ali ibn Ridwan and several Chinese astronomers.

before. The shockwave formed by this sudden collapse causes the rest of the
star to explode in a supernova. Some massive stars, particularly luminous
blue variables, are very unstable to the extent that they violently shed their mass
into space in events known as supernova impostors, becoming significantly
brighter in the process.

layers blow away, creating an expanding cloud of dust
and gas called a planetary nebula. The energy produced by
fusion creates pressure inside the star that balances gravity’s tendency to pull matter together, so the
core starts to collapse. Some low-mass stars will
shine for trillions of years – longer than the universe has currently existed –
while some massive stars will live for only a few million years.
After millions of years, immense pressures and temperatures in the star’s core squeeze
the nuclei of hydrogen atoms together to form helium, a process
called nuclear fusion.

The star’s iron core collapses until forces between the nuclei push the brakes, then it
rebounds. By the time silicon fuses into iron, the star runs out of fuel in a
matter of days. These processes produce energy
that keeps the core from collapsing, but each new fuel buys it less and less time.
